GURGAON, Oct 18: The government is contemplating steps for forming special dedicated police force for dealing with crime against people of North Eastern region, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said today.
Rijiju, who came here to meet a group of students and people from North Eastern region and victims of assault in the Haryana town on Thursday, said hate crime would not be tolerated anywhere and the government would deal with such incidents effectively.
Talking to the media after meeting the people and authorities, Rijiju said, “People from NER are satisfied over the way the issue has been handled, they have demanded dedicated separate helplines and police force.
“We have agreed, special police force will be dedicated to deal with the problems of people from NER, living in Gurgaon, because there are people living from different parts of the country here, as multinationals are located here,” he said.
“We will later consider this to implement it in all metros,” the Minister said.
Incidents are happening everywhere against not only NER people but also Jats and people from Bihar, but more against North-Eastern people because of their appearance, the Minister observed.
“We need to take up certain sensitizing programmes at community level.
“I have spoken to the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the National Security Advisor in this regard and soon a high-level meeting would be held to discuss these issues,” he added.
A group of assailants in an inebriated condition had attacked three youths from Nagaland at Gurgaon’s Sikanderpur village in wee hours on Thursday.
Besides, some similar attacks on NE people were recently reported from different parts of the country, including Delhi and Bangalore. (UNI)
