Itanagar, Oct 2: A voluntary blood donation camp was held at the Police Training Centre (PTC), Banderdewa to mark the month-long observation of National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, Gandhi Jayanti and 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
PTC Principal T Ringu, in his address to the staff and trainees, spoke in length about voluntary blood donation. He reminded the trainees that such kind of blood donation camp should be taken as a part of training curriculum as the nature of the job of police is such that often they are to go for combat operation against the anti-social elements. In such a situation, injury is common and necessity of transfusion of blood is must. Therefore, developing a habit of blood donation in the cadets will be helpful to save the life of fellow beings.
Besides, he quoted Swami Vivekananda that men are born but death is certain so till we live something which is helpful to mankind should be done before we leave. Therefore, giving blood to save someone’s life is one of good things that anybody can imbibe, he said and exhorted the fresh recruits to inculcate the habit of blood donation which is not only beneficial for others but is good for oneself also.
Dr Nabam Budh, the Deputy Director (Blood Safety) of APSACS, sensitized the trainees on blood donation and also spoke on mode of transmission of HIV/AIDS and how to protect oneself from the disease.
After the brief inaugural and sensitization programme, blood donation camp started where altogether 400 volunteers turned up to donate blood. The blood donation was led by officials of the PTC as they being the first to donate blood. However, due to shortage of blood bags around 148 units of blood could be collected. This itself is a record in the state; as till date no camp has been able to collect such a huge amount of blood.
The blood collected will be shared between Blood Banks of Arunachal State Hospital, Naharlagun and RK Mission Hospital, Itanagar for free distribution to needy patients.
The camp was conducted by the joint medical team from Blood Bank, Arunachal State Hospital, RK Mission Hospital, and Health Centre, Banderdewa. The volunteers from Vivekananda Yuva Shakti including their president Ramesh Jeke also extended their cooperation in smooth conduct of the blood donation camp.
