football1 copyNAMSAI, Aug 6: As sports transcends differences and brings people together, the Namsai (Lohit)-based Socio-Economic Welfare Association (SEWA), as a part of its anti-drugs campaign, has launched a novel venture by conducting the ’1st Teachers’ Day Inter-School Football Tournament’.
The tournament was kicked off at Piyong Secondary School ground today by the chief guest Chow Kyasing Mounglang, Zilla Parishad Chairperson along with the guest of honour, Chow Zingnu Namchoom, president DCC Lohit.
The month-long event is being participated by under-15 students of all the secondary schools of the sub-division.
In his inaugural speech, the ZPC Mounglang appreciated the SEWA’s maiden initiative. Namchoom also spoke on the occasion and said that this sort of event will not only divert the school-going teenagers towards sports, but it shall be a good physical exercise which is very essential for this age group.
In his speech, the chief advisor of the Association, Ven Sunanda Bhikkhu explained the norms of the month-long tournament. He said after screening of various school teams, only 6 teams have been selected to play 22 league matches in their own grounds. The semi-finals and final matches shall be played at the Namsai general ground.
A release said that the organization, SEWA, since its inception has been striving hard for the upliftment of social and economic status of the people of Namsai sub-division by uprooting the evil practices from the society like drugs and other substance abuse which have been rampant in the area.
